Alisson made an awful error for Liverpool to allow Wolves to score the opening goal in their FA Cup tie.
Jurgen Klopp’s side came into the match on the back of an awful 3-1 defeat to Brentofrd in the Premier League.
The holders fielded an extremely strong XI against Wolves, who had rested numerous players for their trip to Anfield.
But it was Julen Lopetegui’s side who took the lead thanks to Alisson’s gaffe.
The Brazilian goalkeeper had the ball at his feet but inexplicably passed the ball straight to Goncalo Guedes, who intercepted the ball and rolled it into the empty net.
Wow.
Klopp had handed Cody Gakpo his debut in this FA Cup third round tie but his debut will now be remembered for Alisson’s huge mistake.
Ahead of the match, Klopp insisted the Dutchman was ready for action.
“Cody is raring to go – he has had three days with us – he looked good in training, we had a full week for training and now we let him start,” Klopp said.
“When you play every three days you need to rotate and manage minutes but we didn’t need to do that this week. The boys are looking forward to it – Cody is a good footballer. He is a smart boy and a good footballer.”
And when asked about Liverpool’s ambitions in the FA Cup this season, Klopp remembered what it was like to lift the trophy at Wembley last campaign.
“We had two fantastic finals at Wembley last season – the competition is great, the final was outstanding and the atmosphere was outstanding,” he said.
“We have our memories and we want to go there again.”
Alisson certainly hasn’t helped them on their way but there’s plenty of time for the Reds to turn the tie around.
