Every Premier League goalkeeper has been ranked by how many goals they’ve prevented this season and Liverpool’s Alisson comes out on top.

Head of Data Science at @goalkeeper_com and general goalkeeping expert, John Harrison, has shared the ‘Goalkeeper Overall Value Ranking’ table of all 20 Premier League No.1’s this season.

Harrison explains how his model shows how many goals goalkeepers have prevented this season.

He writes: “The GK xG model shown above looks at every shot faced, cross faced, through ball faced & distribution attempted & calculates the probability of a goal occurring for & against the GK’s team before the event & after the event occurs! Thus it measures & evaluates every GK action!

“This means at GK xG we can give each GK a single score measured in goals called Overall Value in Goals This measures the GK’s value to their side vs if their side had a league avg GK by looking at every action they could do Thus GKs of different styles can be fairly compared

So, Alisson comes out on top with an impressive value ranking of 4.83. He pips West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski to top spot.

It’s good news for England as two of their goalkeepers feature in the top four with Jordan Pickford in third and Nick Pope in fourth.

Brentford’s David Raya, Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, Fulham’s Bernd Leno, Manchester City’s Ederson, Crystal Palace’s Vicente Guaita and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale complete the top 10 and are ranked ‘above average’.

Down at the other end of the spectrum, Bournemouth’s Mark Travers doesn’t come off favourably with a value ranking of -4.93. Ouch.

It’s not great reading for Wolves’ Jose Sa either with a rating of -3.47.

Southampton’s Gavin Bazunu is also in the ‘relegation zone’.

Avoiding the bottom three by the skin of his teeth is Manchester United’s David de Gea with a rating of -2.37.

Edwin van der Sar: There are no complaints with De Gea

De Gea was left out of Spain’s World Cup squad for Qatar and his Man Utd contract expires in the summer.

However former Man Utd No.1, Edwin van der Sar, believes there can be no complaints regarding De Gea in terms of his ‘goalkeeping’.

But he did suggest the Spaniard needs to improve with the ball at his feet.

“David has done fantastically He succeeded me in 2011, it’s now 2022 – he’s played 11 years and five times player of the season,” Van der Sar told The Athletic. “Yes, he is a certain type of goalkeeper, and he is very good at certain points and a little bit less at other ones. Nobody is perfect.

“But he is still young. He has developed himself. It has also to do with outfield players, the way the coach want to play, the way they want to play the ball from defensive areas. On the goalkeeping side, I don’t think there are any complaints regarding David.

“Nowadays the goalkeepers, they are amazing in how they can put the ball with the left foot and the right foot,” Van der Sar added. “Alisson and Ederson are two great examples, the way they hit the ball is inch-perfect on the crest of the jersey. My game was more about coming outside the box to anticipate and intercept a through ball. They have become much more 11 playing.”
