The first half of Liverpool vs Real Madrid on Tuesday evening was brilliant chaos in the extreme.

It was a last-16 first leg that received a huge build-up due to the two teams involved - and thankfully, the action didn't disappoint one bit.

As halves of Champions League football go, the opening 45 minutes between last season's finalists ranks as one of the best ever seen in the competition.

Darwin Nunez kicked off the entertainment at Anfield with an outrageous goal, before an absolute clanger from Thibaut Courtois allowed Mohamed Salah to make it 2-0 to the hosts.

It really was shades of Loris Karius in the 2018 final from the experienced Belgian shot-stopper.

That all occurred before the clock read 15 minutes, with Vinicius Junior then halving Real Madrid's deficit in the 21st minute of play.

But while Vinicius' first goal was all about sheer footballing brilliance, his second at Anfield to level things at 2-2 had luck written all over it.

An uncharacteristic mistake from Alisson Becker gifted his countryman the easiest of goals, much like Courtois had done for Salah shortly before.

The pass wasn't on, but the Liverpool goalkeeper still went for it - and was left to watch the worst possible outcome unfold in front of his very eyes.
