Noel Whelan has claimed Leif Davis could step up to replace Ezgjan Alioski at Leeds United this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 21-year-old had a chance to stake a claim for a first-team spot ahead of next season.

He is expected to be joined through the exit door by Barry Douglas, who is also out of contract this summer.

The duo’s exit will leave Stuart Dallas as the only recognised senior left-back.

However, the Northern Ireland international has been playing in midfield in recent weeks.

Davis, 21, is a versatile defender who has also played as a left-sided centre-half.

He has played twice this season and has 14 senior games under his belt at Elland Road.

However, with plenty of competition at the heart of the defence, Whelan suggested Davis could establish himself at full-back with his performances at Thorp Arch.

Discussing left-backs at Elland Road, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “We’ve got Leif Davis as well, let’s not forget. He’s somebody else who is competition for places at the training ground. He can play left-sided centre-back too but that competition is now in full flow.

“I very much doubt he’s going to push out any of those players. However, what is up for grabs is Alioski’s place who’s leaving. That natural left side will be available and there’s something he can think about all this summer.

“He can work hard in pre-season to try and claim it as well. It’s about the player and their attitude, the fight and desire they have inside of them. Go out there and claim a spot and be a regular in that team.

“You don’t have to be an international to do that. Sometimes the younger players out there might be performing better. So you’ve got to wait your turn, you’ve got to claim it.

“You’ve got to claim a position. Competition and fighting for those sort of places, I love to see at any club.”
