Alfie getting it thick as Rangers star fails to deliver

Ibrox Noise’s Natalie wrote a fine piece some weeks ago defending Alfredo Morelos, and felt more than vindicated when the striker rose to win us the day v Hibs.

And these positives are too easy to be forgotten after a bad result, so we will reinforce how important those 3 points v Hibs were, how quiet the Colombian had been before he sealed the win with a titanic finish.

And how that moment, that kind of match winning moment is what he has in his locker.

Natalie wasn’t wrong in anything she said.

But unfortunately the Jekyll and Hyde of Morelos came to its negative yesterday as the off-form striker wasted a pile of gilt-edge chances and arguably cost the side the win with profligate finishing.

And herein is the good and the bad of Alfie.

When the guy is in form, in the zone, and confident, being truly honest you have to go into the world’s best forwards to find a wealth of those better than him. The form he showed in the UEL in 19/20 was world class, and he was quite literally one of Europe’s finest hitmen for a time.

Hell, we got more than excited on Ibrox Noise and actually considered a €120M value for a striker doing that at that level that consistently.

He’s clearly not worth that today, and yesterday was a major reason why.

Morelos’ current form is like the rest of the team, patchy, but more than most the Colombian was getting it thick for his wasteful finishing.

‘Hero’ v Hibs, ‘horror’ v Hearts. Indeed, while McGregor’s flap ultimately did cost us the extra 2 points, most fans pointed out bad finishing, specifically from Alfie, let it get to that stage in the first place.

Morelos’ goalscoring just isn’t what it was. Fans have dropped the ‘playing deeper team game’ rhetoric they used to defend him last season with, and are now getting harsher on him.

He’s made it clear enough he wants to start afresh in a new league, so it feels like he’s currently working his ticket and biding his time, but the form isn’t really there. How do we conclude where Morelos is, and his importance?

Well he’s truly one of Britain’s best when on form, but he’s a distance from that right now – but look how rotten Celtic’s Edouard ended up but still left for £20M and is back in form down south. So form is not that important.

Morelos’ first touch and finishing is probably what holds him back these days – neither is especially good and he’s looking a bit slow.

Stevie should certainly look at giving Fashion Sakala more games, if nothing else than to get Morelos’ hunger up – can’t play his ticket out if he’s not playing at all.

We don’t want anyone scapegoating Morelos like they did Lundstram and like they do Tavernier – we don’t want another baddie added to the villain count.

We just want our Rangers playing the best it can.
