Arsène Wenger has confirmed that Alexis Sánchez’s move to Manchester United is likely to happen “in the next 24 hours”.

Reports emerged on Wednesday that the Chile international had signed a four and a half year contract with the Old Trafford outfit.

And on Thursday, Wenger revealed that the move should go through before the weekend – but admitted that if that wasn’t the case, then Sánchez would be considered for selection against Crystal Palace.

Wenger also admitted that he ‘likes” Henrikh Mkhitaryan and would be keen on bringing him to the Emirates Stadium, as has been reported.

“It is a story that is well documented,” he  said. “I am not going to add to that. It can happen, it can as well not happen – it is at that stage. If it doesn’t happen he [Sánchez] will play on Saturday.”

“I work on transfers for 30 years, it is likely to happen but at any moment things can breakdown.”

When pushed to confirm whether the deal would be completed by the weekend, Wenger responded: “Yes it is likely to happen. But any minute things can break down. That’s how the transfer market is. These things are never guaranteed.”

He was then asked about Mkhitaryan’s prospective move in the opposite direction, and whether the Armenian’s wage demands could be a stumbling block for the move.

“Yes that is my understanding. I like the player. No, the wages will not be a problem.”
