However, Arsenal’s response was as anticipated – no thanks!

Alexis’ quest for a new home

Currently at Olympique de Marseille, Alexis has certainly proven his worth this season.

With improved performances and increased goalscoring output with 18 goals in 44 games, he has re-established his name in European football.

Nevertheless, a desire for a familiar home at Arsenal remained.

Having scored 80 goals and provided 45 assists in 166 games for Arsenal, Alexis left an indelible mark on the club.

His performances were such that some fans suggested he could have had a statue at the Emirates Stadium, akin to the icon Thierry Henry, had he not moved to Manchester United.

Despite his decision to leave in 2018, Alexis expressed interest in returning to London, recalling fond memories of his time at Arsenal.

However, Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, was straightforward regarding Alexis’ aspirations.

Acknowledging the affection and merits of the player, Arteta reportedly made it clear that Alexis’s return does not align with the club’s future plans.

The youthful vision of Arsenal

With a view to rejuvenating the squad and fostering a sustainable winning team, Arsenal appear to be prioritising young talents.

Last season’s squad, featuring players primarily under thirty years old, showcased this commitment.

In fact, only three players – Jorginho, Mohamed Eleny and Granit Xhaka, crossed the age of thirty, and all three of those could leave the club this summer.

Further cementing Arteta’s vision is the formation of a young and explosive attack.

With the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal demonstrate a clear focus on nurturing young talent.

In light of this, Alexis’ prospective return was fanciful.

Although his desire to return to Arsenal was thwarted, Alexis’ future remains open.
