América suffered just their third defeat of the Guard1anes 2021 season as they fell to Toluca on Sunday.
Scorers: Estrada 8′, López 11′, Canelo 73′; Aguilera (pen) 51′
Toluca started the game on fire, and raced into a two-goal lead by the 11th minute at the Estadio Nemesio Díez.
Winger Alexis Canelo left América defender Emanuel Aguilera for dead down the right flank before squaring to Michael Estrada who finished from close range.
The hosts doubled their lead when Raúl López rifled home from 25 yards after the Azulcruma had failed to clear their lines adequately from a corner.
Las Águilas were thrown a lifeline early in the second half when Toluca’s Jorge Torres Nilo was adjudged to have handled inside his own penalty area.
Aguilera’s poorly struck spot-kick just managed to creep under goalkeeper Luis Manuel García’s body.
But Toluca secured the three points when Estrada and Canelo linked up again, with the latter this time slotting past Guillermo Ochoa.
The win arrested a run of three straight losses for Los Diablos Rojos, and puts their ability to qualify for the Liguilla in their own hands with one game to play.
América cannot now catch leaders Cruz Azul and are guaranteed to finish second in the Clausura table.
