Manager Thomas Tuchel has a puzzle on his hands regarding who should be Bayern Munich’s first-choice goalkeeper.

According to Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell on Thursday, on-loan shot-stopper Alexander Nübel will return to the Bundesliga outfit.

The 26-year-old made 48 appearances for the French side and is now thrown into the mix for a starting position at his parent club.

Nübel’s loan led to Bayern searching for another player to fill in for an injured Manuel Neuer and they signed Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

However, the German international is well on his way towards being fully fit for pre-season, leaving all three names in contention for the role.

Sven Ulreich (34) is also in the mix after making eight appearances in 2022/23 for Bayern.

According to Switzerland’s goalkeeping coach Patrick Foletti, the list could be cut down as Sommer is reportedly keen to depart the club in search of more minutes.

“I think in Yann’s mind and plans he wants to be in goal every weekend and not sit on the bench,” he said earlier this week. “I don’t know whether that will be at Bayern or anywhere else.”

Between healing injuries, lack of experience and a desire to leave, Tuchel is left with a critical dilemma heading into the new season.
