Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United has become one of the defining sagas of this transfer window. The Swedish striker has openly admitted that promises made by the club have been “broken” and that “the relationship can’t continue” as he looks for a way out.
Nineteen days have passed since Newcastle turned down Liverpool’s £110 million bid, leaving Isak in a standoff with his employers. He took to Instagram to explain his absence from the Professional Footballers’ Association awards gala, where he had been named in the Premier League team of the season.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” Isak wrote. “That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.
“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now, and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
Newcastle United responded firmly. “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer,” the club said in a statement.
“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.”

Liverpool’s opening bid may have been rejected but interest has not faded. With the transfer deadline looming on 1 September, Arne Slot and his recruitment team know a second approach could yet define their summer. Sources suggest the Reds will only return once Newcastle secure striker reinforcements, with any new offer expected to reach a minimum of £120 million.
For now, Liverpool are monitoring closely, aware that Newcastle’s transfer plans could dictate whether negotiations reopen. The Tyneside club have been busy, signing Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Arsenal. Yet, despite these deals, the glaring hole in their squad is up front, particularly following Callum Wilson’s departure.
Eddie Howe has admitted his priority is replacing Wilson. “It’s not like we are looking at any other area,” he said after the draw with Aston Villa. Interest remains in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, but Newcastle are yet to meet the valuation of more than £40 million. Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen is another option, though prising him away so soon after his permanent move looks unlikely.
Such difficulty has left Anthony Gordon playing through the middle, a scenario far from ideal as Newcastle prepare to face Liverpool. The lack of striking depth has only amplified the Isak situation and underlined how dependent Newcastle remain on him.

Should a deal not materialise, the question becomes whether Isak can be reintegrated into the squad. Howe has consistently left the door open, and the club insists he will be welcomed back “when he is ready to rejoin his team-mates.” Yet the reaction from some fans, labelling him “greedy” at Villa Park, highlights the fracture that now exists.
With Liverpool waiting, Newcastle searching, and Isak growing restless, this transfer story still has distance left to run. What is clear is that both clubs’ plans are intertwined, and the next fortnight will shape not only the striker’s future but also the ambitions of two sides chasing success in the Premier League.
