Manchester United’s 8-2 thrashing of Arsenal at Old Trafford remains one of the Premier League’s craziest ever games.

At the start of the 2011/12 season, Arsene Wenger’s injury-depleted side travelled up north and were absolutely humiliated.

The likes of Carl Jenkinson, Johan Djourou, Francis Coquelin and Armand Traore just couldn’t live with the Red Devils, particularly in the second half of proceedings.

United were 3-1 ahead at the interval thanks to goals from Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney, with Theo Walcott netting for the visitors.

Things then turned very, very ugly for Arsenal in the final 45 minutes of play at the Theatre of Dreams.

Rooney completed a brilliant hat-trick that included two free-kicks, Young netted his second stunner of the day, Nani and Park Ji-sung both got on the scoresheet and Jenkinson was shown a second yellow card for a clumsy foul.

The only minor positive for the north London outfit in the second half was Robin van Persie’s 74th-minute goal, although that only reduced the deficit from 6-1 to 6-2.

It was undoubtedly the lowest point in Arsenal’s rich Premier League history and Wenger looked a broken man on the touchline after referee Howard Webb blew the full-time whistle.

His arch nemesis had done a number on him, but Sir Alex Ferguson being the class act he is didn’t rub salt in Wenger’s wounds.

The Scotsman remained incredibly humble throughout his post-match interview with Sky Sports, refusing to gloat about the incredible result United had achieved over their fierce rivals.

Ferguson took time to praise Arsenal’s attacking players and even stated the he didn’t want his team to score more than eight, due to the fact they were playing a weakened team.

Class personified.

It’s quite remarkable to think that Wenger’s side bounced back from their 8-2 mauling and finished the 2011/12 Premier League season in third place, which saw them qualify for the Champions League.

Much of that was down to the unquestionable magnificence of Van Persie, though.

The Dutchman – who infamously joined United in the summer of 2012 – scored 30 goals and assisted 13 more in his 38 Premier League outings, numbers which saw him win the coveted PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.
