Former Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has lent his support to the club’s plans to replace Old Trafford with a brand new stadium in Manchester.
The club unveiled its plan to demolish the iconic ground and build a 100,000-capacity stadium next to it on Tuesday morning.
The ambitious plan is part of a wider regeneration project that Man United claim will bring an additional £7.3bn into the UK economy and create thousands of new jobs.
Old Trafford has been United’s home ground for 115 years and played host to some of the greatest moments in the club’s history. But Ferguson says the club “must be brave” in taking the leap to a new home.
“Manchester United should always strive for the best in everything it does, on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium we play in,” the legendary manager said.
“Old Trafford holds so many special memories for me personally, but we must be brave and seize this opportunity to build a new home, fit for the future, where new history can be made.”
It is estimated that the new stadium will cost in the region of £2bn to construct and could be completed by 2030.
Architect Lord Norman Foster shed more light on the stadium’s design, which features a giant canopy hanging from three masts.
“The stadium is contained by a vast umbrella, harvesting energy and rainwater, and sheltering a new public plaza that is twice the size of Trafalgar Square. The outward-looking stadium will be the beating heart of a new sustainable district, which is completely walkable, served by public transport, and endowed by nature.
“It is a mixed-use miniature city of the future – driving a new wave of growth and creating a global destination that Mancunians can be proud of.”
