Antoine Griezmann (33) shone for Atlético de Madrid yesterday evening with a man-of-the-match-winning performance as the Spanish side defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Estadio Metropolitano.

Diego Simeone’s side fired forwards in the first half earning an early lead with goals from Rodrigo De Paul (29) in the fourth minute and Samuel Lino (24) in the 32nd. Despite not recording his name on the scoresheet, the Frenchman was a constant threat to the visitors.

His range of passing looked to provide his teammates with chance after chance to heat the palms of Paris Saint-Germain linked goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (26) who excelled on a night when the French capital was undone by multiple goalkeeping errors.

For the second goal, Griezmann was decisive, his excellent reading of the game meant that he maintained an onside position as Atlético looked for the through ball past the Dortmund defence, eventually finding the forward, who attacked the box and with a scooped pass assisted Lino.

The night would end in some frustration as Dortmund halved the deficit late in the game with a strike from Sébastien Haller (29) but praise for the Frenchman flowed far beyond the final whistle.

‘Griezmann can play the ball anywhere he wants to’

Former player Alessandro Del Piero speaking in his role as a correspondent for CBS Sports sang Griezmann’s praises, “This guy is unbelievable. His mind is the most precious gift that he has, what he can put together out on the field is out of control, he can play the ball anywhere he wants to.”
