Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 28 games

Article image:Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 28 games

Preston North End’s first win at the Hawthorns since 1973 ended Albion’s club record unbeaten home start to a campaign at 13 matches and means that this season is now the Baggies’ worst start to a second tier campaign since 1999/2000 when Brian Little’s team sat in 19th place after 28 games with just 29 points.

That was the last season in which Albion were either not in, or not challenging for promotion to, the Premier League, but this season’s tally of 45 points from 28 games is still better than all but one of the 20th century second tier campaigns following the Baggies’ relegation in 1986. The outlier was the briefly positive 1988/89 season when Brian Talbot’s side had amassed 46 points at the same stage and also sat in 5th place but fell away to finish 9th.
