Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 26 games

Article image:Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 26 games

A sixth defeat on the road for Valérien Ismaël’s Albion means that this is the worst start of a second tier campaign this century with Tony Mowbray’s 2006/07 side having earned one more point from 26 games.

Albion have scored just two goals in their last seven away games, their worst such run since 2014 when they went four away games without scoring either side of the close season having scored just two in the previous three. The last time the Baggies had such a poor goalscoring run away from home outside the Premier League was towards the end of Bobby Gould’s tenure in 1992 when they scored just twice in eight away games between a 3-0 away win at St Andrew’s in February and a 3-1 win at Shrewsbury Town on the final day of the season.

With twenty games of the season still to go, there is plenty of time for the Baggies to recover the season but the turnaround in form needs to start soon. Gary Megson’s 2001/02 team had just two more points at the same stage and yet managed to secure a top two finish.
