Kristjan Asllani and Piotr Zielinski are vying to start in holding midfield for Inter Milan against Venezia with Hakan Calhanoglu out.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter will be without a key player this weekend in the form of Calhanoglu.
The former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder picked up a thigh problem in the Supercoppa Italiana final against AC Milan.
Calhanoglu’s injury is hardly a serious one. However, it will be significant enough that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will not risk him against Venezia on Sunday.
In Calhanoglu’s place at the base of midfield, Inzaghi has a couple options.
Kristjan Asllani is the Turkish international’s main backup in the squad.
Asllani’s substitute appearance and role in Inter’s second half collapse against Milan in the Supercoppa final will not have done wonders for the Albanian’s confidence.
Nevertheless, Inzaghi still backs Asllani. Therefore, there is every chance that the former Empoli midfielder will start on Sunday.
On the other hand, Piotr Zielinski would offer a more experienced presence in the holding midfield role.
The 30-year-old has played at the base of midfield for the Polish national team. He also started a couple of matches for Inter in the position, including against Juventus.
