As per latest reports from SPORT, two Cornella players have tested positive for COVID-19 following their Copa del Rey clash against FC Barcelona on Thursday night. The club have communicated the news to Barcelona immediately so that they can take immediate measures.

Cornella’s Segunda B fixture against El Prat over the weekend is now in jeopardy. Cornella had also reported two positive PCR tests for a player and one of the kitmen at the beginning of the week.

The two were placed into immediate isolation, but now with two more players testing positive, it has been declared as an ‘outbreak state’ which means further actions have to be taken. One of the two players who tested positive today reportedly did not play, but the other participated in the game.

Barcelona and Cornella battled out their Round of 32 fixture as it went to extra time in a tight encounter. Missed penalties and a lacklustre performance from a heavily rotated Barcelona side meant it was very difficult to break down their fellow Catalans. However, there might be cause for alarm now in both camps.

Barça ae scheduled to visit Elche on Sunday for their round 20 La Liga fixture. As of now, Barcelona have not reported any positive cases. However, they will now of course have to carry out mandatory PCR tests before their visit to the Valencian club. The game is now at risk of immediate suspension.

Barcelona are currently sitting third in the La Liga standings with 34 points from 18 games. 18th placed Elche meanwhile, have managed just 17 points from 17 games. The fixture remains vital for the Blaugrana if they are to keep pace with Real Madrid and leaders Atletico Madrid. Elche will also be desperate for a win to take them at least provisionally clear of the relegation zone.
