Former Newcastle United star Alan Shearer has included one Manchester United defender in his Premier League Team of the Week.
The Red Devils were unable to return to winning ways on Sunday as they played out a goalless draw against Aston Villa on the road.
Despite this, there were some positives to carry forward. Jonny Evans rolled back the years with an exceptional performance at the back.
The centre-back nullified the presence of Ollie Watkins, and the Red Devils backline restricted Villa to just one shot on target over 90 minutes.
Shearer has now included Evans in his Premier League Team of the Week. He said: “A very solid game. Was Man Utd’s best defender as they shut out a potent Aston Villa attack.”
Evans was a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up yesterday. The experienced ace proved his worth, winning an impressive 11 out of his 12 duels contested (92 percent success rate).
The Northern Irishman also won 100% of his tackles (4/4) with three clearances and one blocked shot.
It was an unexpected performance from the veteran star. Evans said that the team played for the manager, and his efforts could keep Erik ten Hag at the club.
United have a board meeting tomorrow to possibly decide the Dutchman’s future. The stalemate against an in-form Villa outfit could be considered a positive in Ten Hag’s favour.
The Red Devils are 14th in the standings with eight points, which represents their worst-ever start at the current stage of a top-flight campaign in 35 years. They host Brentford after the international break.
