Despite finishing top of the Apertura table, América have crashed out of the Liguilla at the first time of asking.
Scorers: Aguilera PEN 11′; Mozo 29′, Corozo 42′, Higor 82′
Following the 0-0 draw in midweek, the Azulcrema took an early lead in this quarter-final second leg at the Estadio Azteca.
Emanuel Aguilera converted from the spot after Roger Martínez made the most of what was minimal contact between him and Erik Lira in the area.
Pumas were desperately unlucky not to equalise soon after when striker Juan Dinenno headed off the crossbar twice in quick succession from a corner.
The visitors continued to press, and were rewarded just before the half-hour mark when Alan Mozo’s left-footed cross evaded everyone to creep in at the far post.
Mozo then turned provider just before half-time, as his pinpoint right-footed cross was nodded home by Washington Corozo.
From there on out, Las Águilas never seriously looked like they could level matters.
And the final nail in their coffin came when yet another cross from Mozo was helped to the net, this time via the head of substitute Higor.
Pumas move on to the semi-finals, while América manager Santiago Solari must find answers to why his side have exited at this stage for the second consecutive season.
