Manchester City have reached an agreement with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal regarding the transfer of Joao Cancelo, according to Portuguese media.

The future of the veteran full-back has remained largely uncertain over the course of the summer months, having returned to the City Football Academy to resume his training ground duties following his European Championship break.

Cancelo is understood to have prioritised a move back to FC Barcelona this summer, having spent the last campaign on loan with the Catalan club. However, the La Liga side’s precarious financial position has hindered an approach, and led to Jorge Mendes seeking other options.

A return to Italy has been on the cards at other moments this summer, with some reports pointing towards interest from the likes of Juventus and Inter. But it now appears as though a financially-beneficial move to the Middle-East has been agreed.

That is as per developing reports emerging from Portugal, pointing towards the eye-watering financials that have supposedly been agreed by all parties ahead of medical testing and documentation signing in the coming days.

According to the information of Portuguese media outlet A Bola, Premier League champions Manchester City have now reached an agreement with Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal over the transfer of Joao Cancelo this summer.

The report claims that the two clubs have agreed on a €40 million transfer fee for the 30-year-old right-back, who is expected to put pen to paper on a three-year agreement in Saudi Arabia worth a total salary package of €70 million across the contract.

Should the mentioned figures prove to be accurate, then Joao Cancelo will become Manchester City’s fourth big-money departure of the summer market and the second most-expensive completed over the last few months.

Julian Alvarez set the record for the summer having signed for Atletico Madrid in an initial €75 million agreement that could rise to €95 million through the add-ons agreed upon with Manchester City for the 24-year-old.

Other notable big-money departures include the likes of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and the England youth international’s £20 million move to newly-promoted Premier League club Southampton, as well as Sergio Gomez’s €10 million switch to Real Sociedad.
