Manchester City stuck to their guns which have been on display throughout the season, controlling the tempo of the game and scraping their way to the next round of the cup.
Initially, the chances didnât flow from either team in the first fifteen minutes.
A Rob Holding error saw Erling Haaland get a sniff at goal from long range, but his acrobatic effort was dealt with calmly.
Arsenal grew into the game as the first half wore on, forcing Stefan Ortega to make a handful of strong saves in the City net.
It remained scrappy and cagey until the last whistle of the opening 45 minutes, with neither team looking all too keen on taking risks going forward.
The proceedings continued to stay cagey in the second half.
City looked the likelier to threaten the untouched score sheet, but the final pass appeared to be lacking for the Blues on the night.
That was until second-half substitute JuliĂĄn Ălvarez rang his shot off the post just past the hour mark, firing the first shot over the bow of the Gunners.

The visitorsâ luck did not last, as almost immediately after dodging the first bullet, Nathan AkĂ© finessed his effort into the bottom corner to open the scoring.
A late Arsenal flurry of corners made the home crowd have to sweat through the final minutes, but the City rearguard held on to secure the victory.
