Nathan Ake helped the Netherlands take a step closer to Euro 2024 qualification as the Dutch won 2-1 away to the Republic of Ireland.

The City defender played a full 90 minutes as they recorded an impressive victory in Dublin to remain second in Group B.

Ireland made a perfect start when Adam Idah put them ahead inside four minutes from the penalty spot after a handball from Virgil van Dijk.

But the Dutch were level 15 minutes later with a penalty of their own converted by Cody Gakpo and the winner came in the second half through Wout Weghorst.

Victory leaves the Netherlands six points behind leaders France with a game in hand but severely damages Ireland’s hopes of qualifying.

More City players will be action in the upcoming week with Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias in the Portugal squad ahead of facing Luxembourg on Monday with England, Norway, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland playing the following night.
