Ajax have released a statement to all traveling supporters ensuring them that they will all be reimbursed after their historic loss in the KNVB Cup to amateur side USV Hercules.

The Dutch giants lost 3-2 away to the fourth tier side thanks to a brace from Tim Pieters and a 93rd minute winner from Mats Grotenbreg.

Ajax had made a late comeback attempt after going 2-0 down in the 66th minute with strikes from Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom in the 83rd and 89th minute finding the back of the net, but their late efforts were in vain.

After such an embarrassing defeat an email has been sent to the 325 fans who attended the match.

“In consultation with the group of players and technical staff, it has been decided that all away supporters who had bought a ticket will be compensated. This means that we will reimburse your match ticket and bus trip. The amount paid for this will soon be in your account,” the email reads.

It has been a season filled with turbulence for Ajax who are fifth in the Eredivisie having at one point languished in the relegation zone.

Departures of star players including Jurriën Timber, Mohammed Kudus and Edson Álvarez to the Premier League hit them hard and after just one win from their opening seven games alongside huge fan protests, manager Maurice Steijn was given his marching orders.

Form has improved under interim manager John van’t Schip but it is clear to see that there still are several cracks that still need to be filled.
