With the manager Alfred Schreuder under pressure after five consecutive draws, Ajax came out of the blocks in fine fettle.

The hosts poured the pressure on their relegation-threatened visitors, but were just missing the final ball to dent the scoresheet.

Ajax seemed void of any luck in the first half, coming inches from scoring on multiple occasions.

The biggest shock came with nearly the last kick of the half when Jurrien Timber’s point-blank effort was somehow cleared off of the line.

The half-time scoreline of 0-0 will have been a welcome surprise to the Voldenam players, having been thoroughly outplayed in the 45 minutes.

It was much of the same in the second half, as Schreuder’s men threw everything in their locker at the Volendam goal.

But they were stunned on the hour mark when Damon Mirani stabbed home from close range with the visitors’ first shot on goal to snatch an unlikely lead.

However, the Ajax responded superbly.

A pair of second half substitutes reclaimed parity for the hosts when Lorenzo Lucca’s knockdown header found its way into the path of Mohammed Kudus, who slotted home to equalise with ten minutes remaining.

A last minute turnaround was not to be however, as the visitors held on for a famous point in Amsterdam.

As a result Ajax will head into the weekend outside of the top three, and could end it a full ten points behind league leaders Feyenoord.
