Ajax star happy that Chelsea transfer collapsed

Edson Alvarez of Ajax was very nearly a Chelsea player, with the club trying to land him on deadline day ahead of this season.

The Mexico international was desperate to come too, and he went on strike and kicked up a real fuss to try and force a move, then sulked when the Dutch club rejected our advances and had to stay.

Looking back on it all in an interview quoted by SportsMole, Alvarez admits he’s actually glad it never happened because of how Chelsea’s season ended up going:

“At first, because it felt like a mental challenge. Still, I turned the switch again afterwards, because Ajax is also a big club,” the tenacious defensive midfielder said.

“I also believe that everything in life happens for a reason. If you see Chelsea’s season now, for example, also with all kinds of problems, then maybe it should have been that way. And this season, however difficult, has also been educational for me.”

After recovering his composure and buckling down, Alvarez played well last season, and is now being linked heavily with moves to other clubs, but seems to have fallen off our radar somewhat, despite the fact we still desperately need a player in that position. We hear some names mentioned all the time, but not his, which is curious given how close we came to signing him a year ago.
