Ajax have confirmed the departure of manager Alfred Schreuder following the club’s 1-1 draw with relegation zone Volendam on Thursday.

The news comes after the club registered six draws in a row in the Eredivisie, subsequently sitting 5th in the table and seven points off leaders Feyenoord.

The official statement refers to the “many points lost and the team’s lack of development” as the reason for his departure.

“It is a painful decision, but also a necessary one. After a good start to the season, we then lost an unnecessary number of points. The game was also volatile,” said Edwin van der Sar.

“The World Cup meant an early and long winter break. Time kept us confident to change things and improve [but] in recent weeks it became increasingly clear that he could not turn the tide.

“While we believe that despite the many transfers he had a strong and championship-worthy squad at his disposal. Having also lost a lot of points in recent weeks, unfortunately, we did not see any progress.”
