Ajax have parted company with Maurice Steijn after just four months at the helm.
The 49-year-old was appointed on a three-year contract this summer following a season of transition for the Amsterdam club.
But Steijn leaves the Johan Cruijff ArenA having won just two of his opening 11 games in charge which left Ajax in the Eredivisie relegation zone.
“This morning, I sat down with the board, and we continued our talks later this afternoon,” Steijn confirmed in a statement.
“We came to the conclusion that this is what is best for Ajax, although I regret that.
“Everyone who knows me knows I have done everything to take Ajax back to the place where this club belongs.
“But I failed to do so. I want to thank the supporters and the people I have worked with here, and I hope Ajax will find its way up again soon.”
Steijn’s assistant Hedwiges Maduro will take caretaker charge of the club where his playing career began and led to a four-year spell in the Dutch capital.
Ajax entertain Brighton in their Europa League group encounter on Thursday before a showdown at PSV on Sunday.
