Marc Overmars has revealed why Barcelona didn’t sign Frenkie de Jong in the summer and it’s pretty straightforward: they wouldn’t meet Ajax’s asking price.
Reliable reports throughout the summer said the LaLiga champions were interested in the midfielder, who made his debut for the Netherlands last week.
Now Overmars, Ajax’s director of football, has confirmed there was a bid from Barcelona but it simply wasn’t high enough.
“Barça did not value De Jong, the offer did not correspond to Frenkie’s qualities,” Overmars said.
“They could come back for Frenkie in January but our players will not leave during this period.”
Looks like De Jong will have to wait until next summer to get his move to Camp Nou.
Barcelona did sign Arturo Vidal and Arthur during the summer but hoped to add another technical midfielder having lose Andrés Iniesta.
De Jong is also considered versatile enough to provide cover for Sergio Busquets at the base of the midfield.
Philippe Coutinho has played centrally so far this season with Vidal not yet fit enough to make his full Barcelona debut.
