Ajax have announced that all away supporters will receive a refund for tickets and travel costs after their embarrassing defeat to amateur side USV Hercules on Thursday night. The Dutch giants conceded a stoppage time goal to lose 3-2 in the second round of the KNVB Cup and record arguably the biggest shock in the history of Dutch football.
On Friday morning, the night after their catastrophe, Ajax emailed all supporters who travelled to the Stadion Galgenwaard, informing them of the compensation plans. A statement from the club read ‘Due to the failure of our team, you have undoubtedly experienced the match as painful. We share that pain and are deeply ashamed.’
On the night, Ajax went 2-0 down to the fourth-tier side following great goals from Tim Pieters. In the final few minutes, Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom brought the game level, but 22-year-old Mats Grotenbreg quickly responded with a historic goal to send shivers through Dutch football. A remarkable night for Hercules. A horrendous night for the 325 Ajax fans who made the trip to Utrecht.
