Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal had good news for 38-year-old goalkeeper Remko Pasveer after Sunday’s 1-0 Uefa Nations League win over Belgium.

Virgil van Dijk’s header ensured Dutch qualification for the finals of the competition in their last competitive game before the Fifa World Cup starts in November.

Pasveer kept a second successive clean sheet following the 2-0 win over Poland, leading van Gaal to all but confirm the Ajax stopper would be on the plane to Qatar.

Asked by NOS about the goalkeeper’s performance afterwards, the Oranje boss said: “Pasveer did not make a mistake, but Belgium also had few great opportunities, so it was simple work.

“I do think Pasveer will go to the World Cup.”

It marks a remarkable journey for the veteran, who only made his senior debut in Warsaw on Thursday.

He is now set to be one of the deputies to Jasper Cillessen when the Dutch play their Group A opener against Senegal in Al Thumama on 21 November.
