While it has been a difficult campaign for Ajax, they are still one of the top sides on the continent, and will be an attractive proposition for prospective signings.

Philogene signed for the Tigers last summer from Aston Villa on a permanent basis, cementing himself as a key part of Liam Rosenior’s side.

The 22-year-old has contributed eight goals and six assists from 22 appearances in the Championship so far this campaign (all stats from Fbref).

Philogene has been one of the standout talents in the second division this season, playing a key role in Hull’s push for a play-off place.

This has led to Ajax showing transfer interest ahead of the summer window, which opens at the end of the term.

It is believed Aston Villa have a buy-back option of up to £15 million, but the Championship side will look to sell him for more if the Midlands outfit opts not to trigger that clause.

Hull will then effectively be able to name their price, which could be as high as £20 to 25 million, depending on the club’s league status.

Ajax will face competition in the race to secure the forward’s signature, with Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly interested in the player.

Spurs are hoping to reinforce their attacking options for next season, and have identified Philogene as a potential option.

However, Hull’s league status could play a big role in determining his immediate future, as Rosenior’s team could earn promotion to the top flight this year.

Philogene’s contract also runs until the summer of 2026, with the option for a further year, giving them a strong negotiating position.

Hull City league position

Hull are currently occupying a play-off place in the Championship table, sitting sixth.

The gap to the chasing pack behind is just two points, with seventh place Norwich City also holding a game in hand.

A 1-1 draw with Birmingham City on Tuesday evening cost the team two points in what is a fierce battle for fifth and sixth place.

The gap to Southampton in fourth is 13 points, meaning the teams below are likely only fighting for the two remaining top six spots.

Next up for Hull is a home game against league leaders Leicester City on 9 March.

Hull's promotion hopes could determine Philogene's future

Philogene’s stock has really risen in the last few months, with his performances earning him the attention of potential suitors this summer.

A move to Ajax would be quite an exciting opportunity, regardless of their struggles in the Dutch league this year.

Philogene’s future at the MKM Stadium may be tied to their league status, as failure to gain promotion may see him seek a move to a top flight club instead.

But if Hull can secure a top six finish and win the play-offs, then his future will surely lie with the Yorkshire outfit.
