Following their Europa League woes mid-week, Ajax returned to the Eredivisie hoping to continue their trek up the table.

Yet while the visitors dominated the match against NEC (22 shots to seven and 57% possession), John van’t Schip’s half-time talk might’ve been the difference.

The deadlock didn’t break until after the hour mark when Kristian Hlynsson tapped home a cross from point-blank range. It is now back-to-back Eredivisie goals for the 19-year-old.

Hanging on by the skin of their teeth, Ajax had Carlos Forbs acrobatically volley home a late second, which proved to be vital as Elayis Tavsan’s header erased any clean sheet hopes seconds later.

The Dutch giants managed to hold in stoppage time and moved to eighth in the table with their fifth unbeaten league match in a row.
