Ajax’s nightmare start to the season continued as they let a half-time lead slip to capitulate to a 5-2 loss at PSV and sink to the foot of the Eredivisie.

An Hirving Lozano hat-trick did much of the damage as the Amsterdam giants fell to five straight defeats in the league for the first time ever.

Ajax did start well and took a deserved lead on 10 minutes when a speculative volley from Branco van den Boomen from the edge of the area bounced several times and appeared to completely deceive PSV goalkeeper Walter Benítez before finding the net via the post.

Brian Brobbey should have added to that advantage within moments but he somehow skewed wide when alone in front of an open goal – his second big miss of the early drama and typically of his side’s season, they were soon punished for it.

Lozano levelled for the hosts with the most ‘Chucky’ of goals, racing in behind the defence, cutting onto his right foot and firing in low at the near post to level.

But after a lengthy delay due to a medical emergency in the stands, Brobbey finally got his goal in rather unorthodox fashion for Ajax, squeezing home after winning a flick on following a long ball from the goalkeeper before collecting Steven Bergwijn’s return pass.

In the space of just three second half minutes, PSV then turned the game on its head and took the lead for the first time as Luuk de Jong turned in on the rebound after Lozano hit the post before Ismael Saibari rounded the goalkeeper and trundled home.

It got even better on the hour when another incisive foray forward from the hosts saw the ball squared across goal for Lozano to supply the finish before he claimed his hat-trick as more abysmal Ajax defending allowed him to slide in the fifth at the far post.

That result combined with Volendam’s win means Ajax have incredibly fallen to the foot of the table, although they do have games in hand on the sides above them.
