Having joined from Ajax last year, the 24-year-old has started just two Premier League games which could explain why he’d get cold feet about staying at the club for another season.
On top of that, it’s important to note how difficult it has been for all new signings over the past year. COVID-19 has brought lockdowns our way and the players have not been able to settle properly around Manchester, and they’ve yet to see the Stretford End full on matchday.
But Overmars has urged Van de Beek to remain at United during an interview with NOS: “I think Donny should just fight, stay next year and try to claim a starting place. You shouldn’t leave so quickly.”
Former United and Ajax goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar offered more sympathy for Van de Beek, speaking to ESPN.
“He walked the perfect path before joining United. He joined the [Ajax] first team from the academy, became a starter, won trophies, performed in Europe.
“But the midfield of Manchester United is too stacked, they’ve not had any injuries. It’s hard for him.”
