Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico wants to move to Barcelona, according to ESPN.

The Argentine left-back has made only 10 appearances in Eredivisie this season, with manager Erik ten Hag relying heavily on veteran defender Daley Blind.

Tagliafiaco’s situation has caught the attention of the Catalan giants who want him to boost their defensive options.

Barca have favoured Jordi Alba at left-back and are eyeing a loan move for Taglifiaco. However, the Dutch giants want a permanent transfer.

Despite falling down the pecking order at the Amsterdam Arena, ten Hag is reluctant to lose the 29-year-old in the January transfer window.

Barca are understandably in the market for reinforcements, and upgrading the left-back position is a priority.

Valencia’s Jose Gaya is high on the wish list of Blaugrana manager Xavi, but Los Che are reportedly demanding €50 million.

Tagliafico, whose contract expires in 2023, previously discussed his desire to leave Ajax to play in bigger leagues.

Premier League giants Chelsea are also said to be in the race for the Argentine full-back, while Napoli and Marseille have registered their interest.

Tagliagico was an integral part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2018/19. He also won Copa America last year with La Albiceleste.

Football Today’s verdict

Alba’s performances have dipped since Lionel Messi’s departure. He has become much error-prone this season – for instance, against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup defeat.

Although Xavi rates his compatriot highly, Barca must prioritise the signing of a new left-back.

Gaya looks a long shot given Barca’s financial crisis, but the Catalan giants could look to snap up a cheaper alternative in Tagliafico.

The Argentine left-back has established himself as one of the best players in his position over the past few seasons and has repeatedly been linked with big clubs.

He would not have any issues adapting to Barca’s style of play as he is well-versed with the Ajax school of football and should be able to make a smooth transition.
