Ajax have opted not to offer interim coach John Heitinga the job on a permanent basis.
Following the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder, the Dutchman was placed in temporary charge until the end of the season and did declare his interest in keeping the job on a long-term basis.
But sporting director Sven Mislintat has now confirmed that the club will look elsewhere for a new boss as experience is required in the dugout.
“On a personal level, this was a tough decision and it was not easy to tell him. John got on board to help the club in a difficult time, and he did that full of dedication. We are very grateful for that. It was a difficult period, Ajax was in fifth place and ended in third place,” Mislintat stated.
“He learnt a lot in the last couple of months and we would like to play a role in his development and keep him connected to the club but I have concluded that Ajax needs a more experienced head coach.”
It is unclear at this time whether or not Heitinga will return to his role as coach of Jong Ajax.
