Alfred Schreuder let fly at the Dutch press in the wake of Ajax’s rout of Excelsior on Sunday.
While most managers would have been happy to bask in the glory of a 7-1 win, Schreuder took the opportunity to berate journalists for some recent coverage.
A report had claimed that young striker Brian Brobbey is unhappy with his lack of starts since re-signing from Leipzig.
It was the mention of Brobbey in the post-match press conference that set Schreuder off.
“I read an article last week that he is rotting on the couch. Then, I think, you really don’t understand anything at all” the Ajax boss said (via De Telegraaf).
“Brian came on almost all matches. We paid a lot of money for him and he is developing well. Then you are going to write such an article, then you are just creating a mood. That is unacceptable.
“If you’re a journalist, you have to come up with facts. I explained to him beforehand that he would not play everything. I decide who plays. And if people think that players decide, that’s their problem.”
The 49-year-old has also been irked by suggestions of impropriety that his agent, Miloš Malenović, had a major role in the club’s business during the summer transfer window.
“My agent would have helped with transfers. That’s right, that’s very normal in football. It is only not allowed at Ajax because it is the manager of the trainer? That is utter nonsense.
“It has also been important. It was an extreme window for everyone in the club. Do you know why? [Marc] Overmars is gone. This was new for all the people in the club, so it’s normal to be helped.”
The win over Excelsior, achieved with goals from Jorge Sánchez, Steven Berghuis, Brobbey (2), Dušan Tadić, Steven Bergwijn and Mohammed Kudus, keeps Ajax one point ahead of PSV atop the Eredivisie.
