Ajax have confirmed the immediate retirement of Maarten Stekelenburg on Thursday.
The 40-year-old will not renew his contract, which ends in June, and after making his club debut over 20 years ago, will now hang up his boots.
Stekelenburg came through the club’s youth system and went on to win five league titles, four KNVB Cups, and four Johan Cruyff Shields in over 300 appearances.
His career also saw him play for Everton, Southampton, Fulham plus Roma and Monaco.
That is in addition to 63 appearances for the Netherlands national team where he featured in every match during the team’s run to the 2010 World Cup final and at Euro 2020.
This season he has yet to play any matches, but Ajax confirmed Stekelenburg will have the chance to say goodbye to Ajax supporters against FC Utrecht on Sunday.
