Ajax and Aston Villa were both reduced to 10 men in their deadlocked Europa Conference League last-16 encounter.

Brian Brobbey enjoyed the best chance of a cagey first half but skewed his shot into the side netting after ghosting past Ezri Konsa.

The hosts continued to ramp up the pressure after the interval with Kenneth Taylor forcing a strong stop from Emiliano Martínez.

But the Villains’ best-laid plans backfired in the final 10 minutes at the Johan Cruijff Arena as Konsa was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Tristan Gooijer also saw red for a lunging challenge on Nicolò Zaniolo amid a frenetic finish between the sides in Amsterdam.

Unai Emery’s side will welcome Ajax to Villa Park for next Thursday’s return leg.
