Ajax will pay the family of former-footballer Abdelhak Nouri €7.85m in compensation, as well as retiring his number 34 jersey, acknowledging the role they played in the player suffering his injuries.
Nouri suffered permanent brain damage following a cardiac arrest during a pre-season game in July 2017.
“Ajax later confirmed that Nouri’s medical care in the vital phase on the pitch was not adequate and, as an employer, has acknowledged liability for the consequences,” read a statement on the club’s website.
“Since the summer of 2017, Ajax has also reimbursed the costs that must be incurred for the nursing and care of Abdelhak Nouri and will continue to do so.”
Edwin van der Sar, Ajax CEO, said the agreement allows all parties to “close the issue.”
“We all realize that the suffering for Abdelhak and his loved ones is not over. It remains a very sad situation, that’s how we feel here at Ajax, too,” said the 51-year-old.
“We greatly appreciate the way in which Abdelhak’s family cares for him day and night with a lot of love and attention.
“The bond between Ajax and the Nouri family is a permanent one.”
Nouri was forced to retire from football and his contract with Ajax was terminated in 2020.
