Ainsley Maitland-Niles may well have the coldest penalty technique in world football – and he showed that again on Wednesday evening.
The Englishman joined Southampton on a season-long loan from Arsenal in the summer.
He made his eighth appearance for the Saints in midweek in their Carabao Cup third round clash against Sheffield Wednesday.
The Owls took a surprise 1-0 lead at St Mary’s courtesy of Josh Windass’ 24th minute strike.
James Ward-Prowse levelled proceedings in first-half stoppage time as he netted from the penalty spot.
Neither side could find a winner in the second 45 minutes and the match went all the way to penalties.
Maitland-Niles stepped up fourth for the Saints.
With both sides having scored each of their first three penalties, the 25-year-old knew he could not afford to miss.
But Maitland-Niles managed to put the ball in the back of the net in emphatic fashion.
The Arsenal loanee was the coolest man in the stadium as he took a plethora of little steps towards the ball.
He kept his eyes on David Stockdale the whole time and waited for Wednesday’s goalkeeper to move before sending him the wrong way.
