We looked at what AI predicted the outcome of Sunday's League One play-off final between Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient will be.
Charlton Athletic take on Leyton Orient in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Sunday.
After both sides experienced a disappointing first half of the season, it looked highly unlikely that Charlton or Leyton Orient would finish anywhere near the play-off places.
The Addicks looked set for another season of mid-table underachievement when they sat as low as 14th in December, but a run of just four defeats from their last 29 league games saw them record a fourth-placed finish, and manager Nathan Jones may even have been a little frustrated that his side missed out on automatic promotion.
Having been languishing in the relegation zone in early December, the O's turnaround was even more impressive, with Richie Wellens' men producing a stunning run of form in the latter stages of the campaign, including winning all of their final five league games, to seal their place in the top six on the final day.
Charlton will be aiming to return to the Championship for the first time in five years, while Orient, who were in the National League as recently as 2019, have not played in the second tier of English football for 43 years, and as well as achieving promotion, the winners of the game will receive a minimum of £12 million in extra revenue.
Having beaten Wycombe Wanderers 4-0 away from home just a few weeks earlier, Charlton may have expected to get past the Chairboys with relative ease in their play-off semi-final, but that certainly did not prove to be the case.
The first leg at Adams Park was the definition of a tight game of football, with very few chances for either side, and it is fair to say the return fixture at The Valley did not produce too much more entertainment.
Lloyd Jones missed a golden chance to give Charlton the lead in the first half when he headed well wide from just six yards out, and Kayne Ramsey produced two outstanding blocks after the break to prevent Wycombe from going ahead, but just as the game looked to be heading for extra time, Matty Godden slotted home from close range in the 81st minute to send Jones' men to Wembley.
Leyton Orient's semi-final against Stockport County proved to be much more eventful, and the tie was still hanging in the balance after a 2-2 draw at Brisbane Road in the first leg, but the Hatters felt seriously aggrieved that Charlie Kelman's opener for the O's was somehow allowed to stand, despite the striker clearly being in an offside position.
Orient made a strong start to the second leg at Edgeley Park, with Ollie O'Neill giving them the lead in the third minute, but Isaac Olaofe's 74th-minute equaliser ensured that the game would go all the way to penalties, and the visitors prevailed 4-1 on spot-kicks to seal their place in the final.
As Charlton and Leyton Orient prepare to do battle at Wembley on Sunday, we asked AI to predict the outcome of the play-off final.
The Addicks had the fourth-best defensive record in League One this season, conceding just 43 league goals, while they also kept clean sheets in both play-off semi-final legs against Wycombe, and ChatGPT noted that their solidity at the back and the experience within the team could be help them get over the line this weekend.
However, Orient scored five more goals than Charlton during the regular season, and according to AI, the fact they possess a greater attacking threat gives them the edge over their fellow London outfit, as well as the momentum they have built up in recent months during their rise up the table.
ChatGPT predicted that the play-off final would be a closely contested affair, suggesting that it could even go to extra time and penalties, but it believes the O's will be the ones celebrating promotion to the Championship.
