MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continues with Real Estelí FC hosting CD Águila in Group D on Wednesday at Estadio Independencia in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Real Estelí will conclude its participation in the competition as the team is left without opportunities of advancing to the Quarterfinals. The Nicaraguan club is fourth in Group D with three points after a win and two losses in its first Group Stage fixtures.

The Nicaraguan side will look to close out the campaign on a high after a 3-nil win over Hércules last week, with goals from Bancy Hernández, Héctor Aranda and Byron Bonilla.

CD Águila will eye a win to help its chances of securing a top two finish. The club is third in the group with four points and needs a victory, plus a Xelajú victory over Olimpia, to have a chance to secure second place on goal difference.

The Salvadoran side is on its second-longest unbeaten streak in the competition (1W, 1D) after four games without a loss during the 2024 Group Stage (3W, D1).

The meeting will be the fifth all-time encounter between the sides and third in CAC history. Estelí leads the series with two wins to one for Águila, while another match resulted in a draw.

Historic series

This will be the third meeting between Real Estelí FC and CD Águila in the history of the Concacaf Central American Cup, with the Nicaraguan side holding the advantage with one win and one draw.

Their first clash took place on September 25, 2024, in the first leg of the quarterfinals at Estadio Independencia in Estelí. Real Estelí came from behind to claim a 2-1 win, with goals from Juan Vieyra and a free-kick strike by Byron Bonilla, after Blas “El Tanque” Sosa had opened the scoring for the visitors. The return leg was played on October 2, 2024, at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador and ended in a 0-0 draw, allowing the “Tren del Norte” to advance on a 2-1 aggregate.

In total, the two teams have faced each other four times. In addition to the Central American Cup matches, they met in the Round of 16 of the 2017 Scotiabank Concacaf League. On that occasion, CD Águila advanced after a dramatic penalty shootout. The Salvadoran side won the first leg 1-0 on August 2 at Estadio Cuscatlán thanks to a header from Víctor García, while Real Estelí won the second leg 1-0 on August 8 in Estelí, with a goal from Nahún Peralta. The tie was decided from the spot, with Águila winning 4-3 in the shootout.

The overall head-to-head record shows four matches played, with two wins for Real Estelí, one for CD Águila, and one draw.
