On the Newcastle United contracts front, it has now been revealed that an announced extension was given to an NUFC player last year.

Newcastle fans were wondering what the situation was with Jamaal Lascelles, whether he would be staying on after his contract ended on 30 June 2025.

However, The Athletic have now revealed that even though it wasn’t announced at the time, their information is that Lascelles’ contract was extended to 30 June 2026 last year.

The Club Captain currently still recovering from his ACL operation.

The Athletic report – 9 April 2025:

‘Newcastle have not announced that Lascelles now has a contract which runs until 2026, and not 2025 as was previously thought, but sources with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, have informed The Athletic that this is the case.’

Jamaal Lascelles is still only 31, which isn’t old for a central defender, so if he can make a successful recovery, no reason why he can’t be part of the Newcastle United squad next season. Although he is no longer a first eleven choice, plus the expectation of at least one more central defender to be signed this coming summer.

With European football guaranteed, it means United fighting on four fronts next season.

No new faces have came in these last three transfer windows as first eleven contenders and with the squad strength reduced further in January, as Almiron and Kelly left. The clear expectation is that both first team and squad will at least be properly strengthened after PSR pressures forced these last three windows of stalling, in terms of player recruitment.

The Newcastle United contracts position (see below) was already looking really strong.

Eddie Howe asked about Jamaal Lascelles following the Carabao Cup Final success at Wembley:

“He is a big player for us.

“He is very popular and he’s still a huge leader in the group.

“He has got a big presence and I’m delighted that he got to lift the cup with the other guys.

“He deserved that moment for the length of time he’s been here and the service he has given the club.”

Eddie Howe responding when recently asked about how Jamaal Lascelles recovery was going:

“I don’t know whether we will see Jamaal before the end of the season.

“I don’t really want to set a target on his time to return.

“He has started very light training with the squad, but that would be light, not necessarily in competitive drills.

“He has joined in the drills that have been non-competitive and he’s looked really good.

“It’s small steps for him.

“We are hoping he can definitely be joining in and competing in training before the end of the season, but whether that ties in with the team and whether he gets there in time in terms of competitive action, let’s wait and see.”

How the Newcastle United contracts situation now looks (via official club releases and media reports), when current deals are up, including now that Jamaal Lascelles update:

End of June 2025:

Wilson, Gillespie, Ruddy, Lewis

End of June 2026:

Schar, Burn, Targett, Pope, Longstaff, Ashby, Hayden, Trippier, Krafth, Dubravka, Lascelles

End of June 2027:

Botman, Jacob Murphy, Willock

End of June 2028:

Tonali, Isak, Barnes, Livramento, Bruno, Miley, Joelinton, Alex Murphy

End of June 2029:

Kelly (now on loan at Juventus who have an obligation to buy), Hall, Gordon

In February, The Athletic revealed that Newcastle United have a unilateral option with Callum Wilson. The striker sees his current deal set to end on 30 June 2025 and it is up to the club whether to add another year on, plus they have the luxury of being able to wait until after this season had ended, to decide whether they want to take Wilson up to 30 June 2026.

Other than Callum Wilson, that would then leave only the following seeing their current deals set to conclude at the end of June 2025.

Jamal Lewis leaving for sure. Then Ruddy and Gillespie expected to leave as well, unless kept on as part of the backroom/coaching team.
