Tottenham have been warned by the Advertising Standards Agency after they promoted their new stadium as “the only place in London to watch Champions League football”.
With Chelsea and Arsenal both in the Europa League this season, it was hoped at the start of the campaign that the club’s new ground would be able to play host to the likes of Inter, Barcelona and PSV in the group stage.
However, with mounting delays seeing the official unveiling knocked back to 2019 and Mauricio Pochettino’s men struggling to make it into the qualifying positions in Group B, Spurs have now been contacted by the UK’s advertising watchdog.
Two complaints were reportedly made against Tottenham, with the ASA ordering the club not to use the billboard again.
An ASA spokesperson confirmed: “The complainants challenged whether the advert was misleading because the building work of the new stadium hasn’t yet been completed.
“It is unlikely customers will get a chance to watch Tottenham play in the Champions League at the new stadium.”
Spurs need a small miracle to get out of their group, as with two games to go they are trailing Inter by three points and have to host the Nerazzurri as well as travel to Camp Nou.
