Bayern made a slow start but broke the deadlock with their first clear-cut chance, with Joshua Kimmich beating the goalkeeper with the aid of a deflection from Odilon Kossounou.

But Leverkusen equalised 10 minutes into the second half when Bayern’s Benjamin Pavard gave a penalty away for a foul on Amine Adli, and Exequiel Palacios sent Yann Sommer the wrong way from the spot.

And it was that kind of day for the champions, as they gave a second penalty away 20 minutes later.

Dayot Upamecano was the culprit this time for another foul on Adli, and Palacios netted his second penalty of the day to turn the game on its head for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Bayern were left furious after both penalty decisions were awarded by VAR, but that result leaves them second in the table, while Leverkusen move up to eighth.
