ADO Den Haag’s pitch has been voted the best pitch in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie for the fourth year in a row, although the Storks will share the award with the equally popular SC Cambuur.
Both clubs were rated an average of 4.53 on a scale of five. The prize has been awarded by the VVCS (the trade union for professional football players in the Netherlands) to both groundskeeping teams.
Cambuur made the switch from artificial grass to natural grass for their new stadium in 2024 and it seems to be “a choice that is already paying off”, the VVCS wrote on their site. “Artificial grass fields clearly lag behind in the assessment and can only be found from eleventh place.”
So, how does the award work? Well, as Voetbal International explain, all captains of the away Eredivisie and KKD clubs give weekly assessments of the pitch on which they played to the chairman of the VVCS, Evgeniy Levchenko. They do this with a rating from one (bad) to five (excellent) for the pitch on which they played.
