There has been some debate about whether Cristiano Ronaldo did or didn’t score in Portugal’s victory over Uruguay on Monday.

In the 54th minute, Bruno Fernandes whipped a cross into the box and Ronaldo appeared to get the slightest of touches to divert the ball past goalkeeper Sergio Rochet and into the net.

Or did he? The touch was so inconclusive that the goal was awarded to Bruno, although some Ronaldo fans weren’t about to take that decision lying down.

Thankfully, adidas are here to help.

The official supplier of the 2022 World Cup Al Rihla match ball have consulted the 500hz IMU sensor inside the ball and discovered that Ronaldo didn’t get a touch on it and Bruno’s cross went straight in.

A statement from Fifa read: “In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in adidas’s Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game.

“No external force on the ball could be measured as shown by the lack of ‘heartbeat’ in our measurements. The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis.”

So that settles it. The wonders of modern technology eh?

Ronaldo has scored 118 goals for Portugal in his career, we’re sure he can do without adding this one to his tally.
