Wycombe Wanderers Star Adebayo Akinfenwa has spoken out after receiving a standing ovation at the Etihad Stadium last night as The Chairboys were beaten 6-1 by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

Akinfenwa started the match but was substituted in the 65th minute when he received a standing ovation from all sides of the ground.

Speaking to the Wycombe Wanderers media team immediately after the full-time whistle, Akinfenwa expressed how he felt about the reception he had received.

“That’s humbling. So so humbling,” he said to the club website.

“That’s why I love Wycombe. I do.

“I love this place and these memories will stay with me for a lifetime,” Akinfenwa added.

Wycombe had taken a surprising lead early on in the game when Brandon Hanlan tapped in from close range midway through the first half.

However, it didn’t take the defending Premier League Champions long to show their class.

By halftime they lead 3-1 thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Riyadh Mahrez, and Phil Foden, and by full-time, City had put six past Akinfenwa’s Wycombe.

Despite the result, the 39-year-old was upbeat.

“We started off wicked,” he exclaimed.

“I guess they showed their quality. But we showed our togetherness.

“Bit disappointed that we just kind of ran out of legs at the end but it’s an experience against one of the best teams in the world.

“They’ll know they played us even though we let in six. But now it’s about MK Dons,” Akinfenwa concluded.

Wycombe face MK Dons away from home in League One on Saturday.

The Verdict

Having gained a cult-like online following in recent years, everybody in English Football knows the name Adebayo Akinfenwa, which is perhaps why he received such a fantastic reception at the Etihad Stadium last night.

Despite the result, he was upbeat and took the positives from the game, and also made it clear that Wycombe’s full focus now turns to Saturday’s League One opponents MK Dons.

With The Chairboys currently fifth in the League One standings, just two points off league leaders Wigan Athletic, Akinfenwa will be hoping he can continue to play his part as Wycombe seek an immediate return to the Championship.
