A dominant display from Al Taawoun saw them secure a hard-fought 1-0 win over city rivals Al Raed in the Qassim Derby on Saturday afternoon.
The result takes the Wolves four points clear of their opponents and into eighth place in the Roshn Saudi League table.
An avalanche of early chances at the King Abdullah Sports City produced no goals. Flavio and Sultan Mandesh were both denied by goalkeeper Andre Moreira while striker Abdulfattah Adam hit the crossbar, all inside the opening 25 minutes.
Saleh Al Amri’s tame curled effort from the edge of the area was Al Raed’s only notable threat to the opposition goal, while Al Taawoun’s show of attacking intent continued after the restart.
The deadlock was finally broken 12 minutes from time when Musa Barrow supplied a fine through ball for Adam who raced past his marker and poked it past goalkeeper Moreira to bag what would prove to be the winner.
Goalkeeper Mailson had little to do throughout the match, but when called upon deep in added time, he proved a dependable asset for Al Taawoun, making a fine reflex save to tip Karim El Berkaoui’s improvised finish from close range over the crossbar and ensure his side walked away with the three points and a clean sheet.
